After a fantastic New Year's Eve we had a day in Brisbane. What better than going with grandma to the zoo.
Christy identified a zoo that is reasonably close to Brisbane, so that we did not have to drive long. Sydney was in seventh heaven when she sould feed the kangaroos. We ended the visit with feeding the Lorikeets. This activity alone made it worthwhile visiting the zoo. We realized that we did not have to travel all the way to the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary in order to meet with the Lorikeets.
On the way back we drove through Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, had a sandwich and visited the temple. As always it was nicely located, kept and eradiated a feeling of tranquility. Good we made it there.
Well, this was the first 01/01/11, but not until arriving back at Summy's house where we had dinner.
The next day saw us bright and early on the plane to get back to Melbourne.

As every year around Easter, when the kids are on break, the church organizes an Easter activity. Last year it took place on a Saturday, so I could easily attend. This year, the event was scheduled for a Tuesday (12.APR.2011). Christy was very sick and had not slept. So I decided to stay home and watch Sydney, giving Christy a break to recover.
It turned out that the Easter event was really fun. When we arrived, Sydney got to the first of several activity stations. She started with drawing an Easter plate which was then later used to hold some of the goodies. Coming to the second station, the kids could decorate cookies with all sorts of sweets. From colored glaze to marshmallows and M&Ms everything was there. Sydney had a hard time stopping both, eating the sweets and decorating. Cutting out cookies was a next activity before they formed a circle and played some games.
Meanwhile Daddy made himself helpful and cooked up some sausages. The kids were hungry and enjoyed a good lunch before trying to break the Pinada.
Overall a super successful day!

This year's Easter weekend was enormously long. Five full days off as a result of Easter and ANZAC day falling together. ANZAC Day commemorated on the 25th of April each year fell onto Easter Monday. As a result we have been off from Good Friday to Tuesday after Easter.
We took the opportunity to recover from the earlier sicknesses (both Sydney and Christy came down with some nasty bugs!) However, we also had time to revisit Torquay. The scene was very different. There was no space on the sandy beach; too intense were the waves flooding the sand strip we used to put up our sun tent earlier, in summer. The waves attracted a large crowd of surfers, some of them may have participated in the Bells pro competition the day before. (This year marked the 50th competition at Bells Beach.)
Saturday was a quiet day to do chores. Afterwards we took Sydney to watch a movie. This in itself is a challenge with a little kid. I have not understood why the animated children movies are equally long as the adult versions? In any case, Sydney saw quite a bit and remembers it. We had a good family day.
Sunday church (and nap for Daddy!). Monday out in the Ballarat Wildlife Part. The drive was a bit long (90 Minutes door to door) and the park seems expensive for the exhibition they have. On the positive side, Sydney could pet many animals and even feed the kangaroos. (Most parks in Victoria do not allow pet feeding.) After all, the sun came out and we enjoyed one of those lovely warm days in Melbourne. It was just a real pleasure.
The last day off, Tuesday we had a slow start. Sydney got up late. She seems to be growing reflected by increased sleep and food intake. Once the whole family was ready we headed towards Arthurs Seat on the Mornington Peninsula. There we visited the Enchanted Maze Garden. This was perfect for Sydney. There were several mazes, a little pen with chicken, duck and goat and last but not least an inner tube slide. Sydney enjoyed it a lot.
Now back to a short work week.

Sunday afternoon; Christy needed to write her paper for school. So I decided to take Sydney to the park so that she could use some of her energy.
All was fine and we had a good time until after about an hour we played catch. She ran and fell. As she softened her fall with the elbow she immediately cried from pain.
Hours later, after a seemingly endless time in the emergency room we got the diagnosis. A clear fracture of her humerus.
Note: The markings in the xray show the fracture and the resulting shift of the bone to the back.
Another 30 minutes later with the help of laugh gas and a pediatric doctor her arm was put in a half cast and another x-ray was taken.
Note: this picture clearly shows the half cast as well as the reset bone structure which is now a lot more brought forward and aligned with the humerus bone.
We returned home at about 23:00. A long day, Christy's paper was not written and Sydney's plans for the week had massively changed.
The only good news, her fracture seems to be healing quite well and quickly.

This year's birthday for Sydney was definitely different. For one she had a cast as a result of a broken humerus (see earlier article.) Then also, Christy had organized a large birthday party. The place that would host 25 kids (and parents) was a McDonalds in the neighbourhood.
Lots of kids arrived and most of them were dressed in some form of princess costume (for girls.) Sydney had a bash and mostly forgot about the broken arm. She did play with the other kids.
Christy had baked a lot of cup cakes and a great chocolate birthday cake. It was a great and memorable event. Sydney was excited, overwhelmed and by the evening completely spent.
Now what's in for the next one?
