On popular demand we post here grandma's cinnamon roll recipe. (This is the recipe from Christy's grandmother.)
- 1 cup shortening (can be replaced by unsalted butter)
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp salt
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup warm (!!) water
- 2 envelopes yeast (~1/2oz/14g)
- 6.5 cups flour
- 2 eggs
- mix shortening, sugar, salt and boiling water together; if you used butter, let it melt in the hot water
- dissolve yeast in the warm water making sure it is not too hot or else it will destroy the yeast
- mix flour and eggs with dissolved yeast
- add shortening/sugar/salt/water mix once it has cooled down
- mix to a dough
- let the dough rise to double its volume; punch it down and roll it out
- add butter, cinnamon and [brown] sugar (or look for an alternate online recipe for the filling)
- cut the dough in stripes and roll them up
- let the buns rise a second time before baking them in the oven at 300F (~180C) for about 20'
Comments:
- These cinnamon rolls are very rich; so icing is not really needed; if you want to add it, check for a cream cheese, powdered sugar icing recipe online.
- Yeast is very sensitive to temperature; water temperature should be low; temperature of a baby bottle!
