Ever since visiting the Big Island, we have been in love with Hawaii and now want others to enjoy the place as we do. You can do so in our condo which is in the center of Kona. With its 1BR / 1 pullout couch the place can comfortably host 2 adults and up to 2 children.
The condo is in walking distance to stores (~5 minutes) and the beach (~10-15') and offers stunning evening views from its Lanai.
Find more information here; book your spot on the typical vacation rental platforms including AirBnB - Slice of Paradise in Kona or through our direct booking site at Kona-Rental.
Currently: Summer time in Hawaii - it is the warmest time to head to the beach and we see the island getting busier with visitors again.
The first week of school break offered a great opportunity to escape the Melbourne winter cold and grey weather. As a family we drove the almost 10h to Manly and arrived there safely and tired in the late evening.
Christy got us a nice apartment minutes from either side of bay. Despite working from NSW we got opportunities to do a few things as a family and enjoy the warmer weather. Among the things we did, was yet another excursion to Sydney. We took the ferry which brought us in no time into the heart of the city where we had lunch and enjoyed the world famous Sydney Opera House.
This year we decided to travel to Brisbane instead of spending Christy's Birthday, Christmas and New Year in the USA. We hoped to drive the long route (1500mi) from Melbourne to Brisbane and to see more than we did in 2021 when we hastily raced between the two places (in both directions.) At that time COVID caused all sorts of unpredictability when state borders would open and close with short notice.
In 2024 we had much more time to get there. For this reason, we decided to stop about half-way in Maroubra, south of Sydney. There, Christy got us a place for 2 nights right at the coast line. The weather was not playing along and we had mostly grey skies and rain. Still, it was great to stop, recover, go to the beach and eat in Christy's favorite cafe there (Zeebra). Some pictures from this area are below.
The two nights in Maroubra were soon over and we found ourselves on the road to Brisbane. In Brisbane Summer, Christy's sister welcomed us and opened her house for us to stay until the 26th of December. Together we celebrated Christy's birthday and had a wonderful Christmas (and Christmas lunch.) Being in Brisbane also allowed us to see Christy's Mom, Jill, as well as Tyler.
On the 26th we moved on and headed closer to Jill's place. She lives on Bribie Island. Christy had organized a place in Woorim for us. There, right at the golf course Sydney had her own room (yeahh!) as we did, too. We spent a lot of time with family. We moved on to Redcliffe (who knew that Redcliff is where the Bee Gees grew up?) and back into the city before we got to stay in Maroochydore. Summer came up as well and enjoyed our presence eating wonderful meals and playing barefoot bowl.
Too fast did the time go by and soon enough we had to head back again. We spent a night in Surfers Paradise, in one of the high rises there. It is amazing to see how this place has been developed for tourists. There, was our last time swimming in the sea before heading back to Maroubra and a few nights later back to Melbourne where we arrived tired but with many great memories.
I finally get to make these pictures available after having uploaded the pictures quite some time ago.
As you may recall, 2024 is our year of travel. We have decided to go and see Bali, a place we have long avoided. There are so many people from Australia who go there and these people are not always the best representatives of Australia.
In preparation to the trip we got a lot of recommendations from a good friend of ours who used to live there. She hooked us up with a great driver, Christy booked a nice house for use, we were ready to go.
The flight was uneventful and the driver met us at the airport as arranged. On the way to our place, we made a stop to get new SIM cards to ensure we would be hooked up to the network and could use the internet. We reached our place and were excited about its layout, setup and equipment. We would welcome the Swan Villas anytime again.
Over the next 10 days we undertook several adventures. Most of them have been documented separately on this blog. Here just some pictures from Bali and our dive trip to Gili T.
Throughout the trip we avoided the Australian dominated bars and party spots. This way we got to enjoy more local food and people. We had a memorable time and enjoyed our trip to Indonesia (first time for Sydney and Christy).
After Sydney's graduation (see "OLSH Graduation Class of 2024") there was one final formal act to be performed, the Final Assembly. Schools in Australia, particularly parochial and private colleges hold regularly assemblies. They start and finish the school year this way and also have assemblies throughout the year.

This time, parents for the year 12 students were present as they answered to the roll-call one last time in front of the rest of the school. Afterwards there was some cake and drinks outside in the wonderfully sunny weather.
